چکیده

Emissions from Titan’s dayside atmosphere at ultraviolet wavelengths were observed by Voyager. The major source was shown to be photoelectron interactions with the neutral N2 present in the atmosphere whether or not Titan was inside or outside Saturn’s magnetosphere. Since discrepancies exist between observations and models, and photoelectrons do not contribute significantly to emissions from the night side, we use a Monte Carlo model to calculate the emission brightness due to the precipitation of energetic magnetospheric electrons. Titan is assumed to be inside the magnetosphere of Saturn, so that direct coupling of the magnetosphere with the atmosphere is possible. Using extrapolated electron fluxes based on Voyager measurements, the source rates are much smaller than the photoelectron source rates. Since the plasma flow onto Titan’s exobase is highly variable and spatially non-uniform, we give night side emission intensities in a form that can be scaled to the expected Cassini electron flux measurements close to Titan.

Dissociation of N2 in capture and ionization collisions with fast H + and N ions and modeling of positive ion formation in the Titan atmosphere

[1] Electron capture and ionization cross sections for protons and nitrogen ions incident on N2 are measured in the energy range 10–100 keV using time of flight (TOF) coincidence counting techniques. In the case of proton impact the formation of N2 + ions dominates for both electron capture and ionization channels at all energies, whereas for N ions, the N2 + formation dominates for electron ca...

Titan Interaction with Saturn’s Magnetosphere: Mass Loading and Ionopause Location

We investigate the details of Titan's interaction with Saturn's magnetosphere, which includes formation of an ionopause and its location and mass loading via ion pickup. We present some new interpretations of the Voyager 1 encounter results, not previously done by Hartle and coworkers [1]. Using arguments based on theory and observation we show that in the outer pickup region, ion pickup of H +...

Energetic neutral atom emissions from Titan interaction with Saturn's magnetosphere.

The Cassini Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument (MIMI) observed the interaction of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, with Saturn's magnetosphere during two close flybys of Titan on 26 October and 13 December 2004. The MIMI Ion and Neutral Camera (INCA) continuously imaged the energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) generated by charge exchange reactions between the energetic, singly ionized trapped magnetosph...

The Ionosphere of Titan: Ideal Diurnal and Nocturnal Cases

We have solved a stationary Boltzmann transport equation to describe the ionosphere of Titan in two simple cases. The first one deals with the satellite being outside the Kronian magnetosphere on the dayside of Saturn, which happens under strong solar wind conditions. In that case, the main energy source of ionization is the solar photons. We show the effect of the photoionization and the secon...
